Description
The Los Angeles Neighborhood Land Trust (LANLT) was founded in 2002 to grow healthier, safer, and stronger communities by creating parks and gardens that remedy the critical lack of green spaces in greater LA's underserved neighborhoods. Since 2002, LANLT has created 30 parks and gardens throughout LA County, comprising over 21 acres of accessible green space with our soon to be completed Wishing Tree Park in unincorporated West Carson. Our greenspaces continue to serve as critical neighborhood assets and enrich the lives of over 500,000 underserved Angelenos annually. We organize residents to advocate for their own greenspaces, fully involve them in needs assessment and decision-making, and manage the spaces we jointly create. Of the 30 projects developed, LANLT currently operates and maintains 13 sites. Through our Garden Apprenticeship Program, we build leadership skills with at-risk high school students. Hands-on courses build skills while introducing subjects like nutrition, composting, and agricultural education. The only program of its kind in South LA, GAP has trained over 330 students since 2012. LANLT established the Park Equity Leadership Academy to build the capacity of residents to promote policy and systems change and to bring nontraditional voices to the park equity movement. Since 2016, we have engaged over 200 residents in leadership training, educated them in the history of park inequities and the legislative process, and created passionate advocates for change. Upon completion, many of our parks and gardens are operated and managed by our Park and Garden Stewardship Program, we hire community residents as paid LANLT employees and caretakers of their neighborhood greenspaces. This unique approach fosters both community ownership and economic development. LANLT Stewards ensure that our sites are active and safe so that they can continue to serve as welcoming community spaces that promote social connection and healthy lifestyles.
