Irene Martin leads the Americas West Façades Team and the Building Envelope Physics work within the Americas Region at Arup. With a background in Environmental and Mechanical Engineering, she brings a unique and holistic perspective to sustainable façade design on a range of building typologies. Irene’s main areas of focus include optimizing for operational and embodied carbon, indoor occupant comfort, and resource management of buildings with expertise on building envelope performance and retrofits of existing façades, especially as they relate to a changing climate. She has worked on many multi-disciplinary award-winning projects and has also given talks on high-performance building envelopes for the AIA Committee on the Environment (COTE), the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), and the Façade Tectonics Institute World Congress. Irene frequently guest lectures at the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc) and the University of Southern California (USC). She is a holistic thinker and practitioner who helps clients make thoughtful, climate-appropriate choices on building envelope design. Irene sits on the Façade Tectonics Institute’s Embodied Carbon Working Group and on their Advocacy Committee, proposing on energy code developments in California and nationally.
