Presented by Patrick Chopson, this case study delves into the $50 million renovation of the Atlanta Fulton County Public Library, a structure originally designed by Marcel Breuer. Criticized for its fortress-like design that blocked natural light, the building was at risk of demolition. By choosing renovation over demolition, the project preserved the embodied carbon equivalent to the emissions from burning 80,000 gallons of gasoline, inherent in its concrete structure. 

Led by Cooper Carry and Vines Architecture, the renovation involved strategic, minimalistic interventions that revitalized the building while respecting its brutalist architectural roots. This approach not only retained the significant embodied carbon but also reduced potential waste and environmental impact associated with constructing a new building. 

The project expertly balanced historic preservation with modern functionality, significantly enhancing daylight access and reducing ongoing energy consumption. Sandeep Ahuja’s presentation emphasizes the critical role of daylight analysis and energy-efficient design in modernizing historic spaces. This case study serves as a prime example of how architectural renovations can leverage existing materials to mitigate environmental impact while updating functionality and aesthetics.
